An Eventful May in St. Petersburg

 

St. Petersburg has become the first city in Russia to join the international program to ensure safe tourism – Safe Travels. As part of this initiative, Safe Travels SPb, a single sign for the hospitality industry, operates in St. Petersburg. For the guests of the city, such a sign is a guarantee that the services provided by tourist organizations meet the requirements of sanitary and hygienic standards and safety.

 

May in St. Petersburg is not only the romantic time of the year with so-called White nights, but also the period when many different events take place in the city.

 

Spring, Labour Day and Victory Day

 

May 1st and May 9th are the most important celebrations in Russia. During these days festive events are organized in the city, with concerts and masterclasses. Victory Day opens with a large-scale parade and ends with fireworks. The holiday program includes field kitchens, musical performances, and exhibitions.

 

 

Icebreaker Festival

 

This year, one of the most spectacular spring events of the Northern Capital is scheduled for May 4-5. The official start date is on the 4th at 13.00 and it will take place on the embankment of Lieutenant Schmidt. in half an hour the captain of the Big Port on a boat will make a detour of icebreakers with a greeting.  Active icebreakers such as, “Captain Sorokin”, “Mudyug”, “Ivan Kruzenshtern” and “St. Petersburg” will attend the festival. The main attraction of the festival is the traditional “Waltz of tugboats”, which will take place in the waters of  Neva on May 5. Additionally, spectators are able to visit one of the first Icebreakers (Krasin).

Bikers will open the season

 

The opening of the St. Petersburg motorcycle season will take place on May 4. The motorcycle parade starts at 14.00 from Palace Square. Following the lap of honor, bikers will return to Palace Square for the “cultural program”. The traditional concert is scheduled for the whole day this year – from 11.00 to the evening.  Popular cover bands are among the performers.

 

An evening of one-act ballets

 

On May 6, the brilliant Hermitage Theater will host an evening of one-act ballets “Not white Adagio”. “Gamma”, “Six years later”, and “Girl” staged by Israeli choreographer Roy Assaf.

 

Peterhoff fountain show

 

On May 22, there will be a celebration to honor the opening of the fountains in Peterhof. These fountains represent the culture of the 18th century. A theatrical performance, music, and light show will accompany the magnificent fountain launch show.

 

 

The City Day (May 27)

 

City Day in St. Petersburg is traditionally celebrated during the second half of May. Peter the Great founded St. Petersburg on May 27 (May 16, old style), 1703. All St. Petersburg creative collectives and music stars will perform in the center of St. Petersburg for the important holiday. A unique light show of drawbridges will take place in the evening, and the holiday will end with grandiose fireworks and shows of drones. Furthermore, on May 27th in honor of City Day, a large-scale open-air of world opera and choreographic art will take place on Palace Square. The participants of the project are renowned opera and ballet performers which will be accompanied by a Large Symphony Orchestra.

The Champions League final

 

On May 28, St. Petersburg hosts the Champions League final. It will take place at St. Petersburg Arena and will host many fans from all over the world.
